Abstract
Almost everything on Earth moves in a meridional (i.e. north-south) direction. While this motion may seem trivial, such latitude-crossing movement is actually difficult to achieve due to the conservation law of angular momentum. Consider a "stationary" air parcel at the equator, which has an absolute angular momentum that corresponds to the Earth's rotation. If this parcel were to move to either the North Pole or the South Pole without any external forces acting on it, its angular velocity would become infinite!
