Abstract: Consider throwing a ball from a top of a cliff at an launch angle of θ. When the horizontal distance of the travel takes maximum, θ satisfies tan θ = √{ v₀² / ( v₀² + 2gh ) } = √{ K / ( K+P ) } with initial kinetic energy K = (1/2) mv₀² and initial potential energy P = mgh, where m is the mass of the ball, v₀ is the initial velocity, h is the cliff height, and g is the gravity acceleration. Interestingly, we can write θ in terms of K and P alone, and the logic can be explained without calculus. This talk is based on the following document written in Japanese: Kudo, T., Hara, N. & Shimoda, M. (2013). doi: 10.50835/kumako.5.0_116
